Windows Server 2003 – How to Transfer FSMO Roles

Remember that in the acronym FSMO, the word Flexible means that you can move the role to a more suitable domain controller . There are two scenarios for transferring the FSMO roles, the first is a planned transfer where the original FSMO Operations Master is up and running.

What are FSMO Roles?

Schema Master – one per forest.
Domain Naming Master – one per forest.
Relative ID (RID) Master – one per domain.
Primary Domain Controller (PDC) Emulator – one per domain.
Infrastructure Master – one per domain.

What are the 5 FSMO Active Directory Roles?

What FSMO Roles are on my Server?

Click Start, click Run, type dsa.
Right-click the selected Domain Object in the top-left pane, and then click Operations Masters.

Where are FSMO Roles Located?
