What is a Demo in a Game?

A game demo is a usually freely distributed piece of a video game. Demos are typically released by the games publisher to help consumers get a feel of the game before deciding whether to buy the full version and/or keep it.

How Long are Game Demos Usually?

In some cases, a single game demo can offer up to 10 hours of gameplay, which is the length of some full-priced games! Better yet, most of the time you can transfer whatever progress you made in the demo over to the full game so you don't have to replay anything.

Do Game Demos Still Exist?

Strictly speaking, demos never went away, they just fell out of fashion. New ones still crop up every week for smaller indie games , but only recently have they returned in a big way for higherprofile releases outside of multiplayer betas. The jurys still out on why demos lost popularity in the last decade.

What Happened to Video Game Demos?

Such demos were often sold with gamer magazines or were available to download online. Nowadays, youll almost never see a demo for a major video game release. Gamers no longer have the ability to try out lots of games for free. Its a case of buying a game and hoping that you enjoy it.
