Just wanted to share a potential fix if you're getting repeated Summoning Failed... messages. Log out the game, go to internet settings and test connection. Close and restart the game, and hopefully that's it!

Why is the Summoning Failing on Dark Souls?

If you're still experiencing problems, then the game's unintuitive P2P pool is acting up. Finally, if you're getting summon failed errors multiple times in a row before your partner's sign disappears, either the client or host (not both) should quit the game and retry.

Why does my Summon Keep Failing?

Unfortunately, summon fails are common, and there seem to be multiple causes. The most obvious is just basic network issues where you and/or your summon have dodgy internet and are just having a hard time connecting. Even if you do manage to connect, you often get dumped back to your world within a few minutes.
