Is Icewind Dale Better than Baldur's Gate?

Icewind dale is much more fast pace and combat oriented so it makes sense that the combat would be more challenging but it was a area I became dissapointed with in Baldurs Gate 2 as half way through Shadows of Amn there wasnt much that could stand up to my party.
