Sadly, the game ceased development of new content updates in May (in Japan) and June (in western territories) 2017, on account of reaching the maximum savegame filesize allowed on the 3DS hardware. Even though it is still playable, certain badge sets were left unreleased in various regions outside of Japan.

The game ceased its addition of new badges in Japan on May 25th 2017 with the last ever Pokémon badges, bringing the total of Pokémon badges up to 2,084 badges.
