The reason why it is bad to dig straight down in Minecraft is because you dont know whats underneath you. This is a bad thing because you could fall into unsuspecting traps like lava or monsters, causing you to lose all of your stuff. Instead, dig a staircase.

If you did straight down in the earth you wont even got half way through with out burning to death. The more closer you get to the earths crust which is in the middle of the earth the hotter it will get; meaning youll burn to death. So you wont get to the other side of earth.
