Difference between Application and External? : R/MCPE
If you use application, you can access your worlds and packs if you sign in on other devices. If you use external you can only access your files on that device.
What does External in Minecraft Mean?
Additional comment actions. Choose external as your saves will stay if you delete Minecraft off your phone for whatever reason. You can also back them up, copy your worlds onto your computer etc. After choosing that option your saves should appear in games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds folder on your internal storage.

Check current storage location setting is set to "Application" (under Settings -> General -> Profile).
Set File Storage Location to "External"
Come out of Settings and go to Play.
You should still be able to see all your worlds in Application storage.
