Chess SetUp – The Basic Rules of Chess for Kids

The White Queen stands on the Center-White Square with the White King next to her on the Center-Black square, while the Black King and Queen do the opposite across from them so that the King and Queen on each side are facing the other player's King and Queen.

Is the Queen on the Left or Right in Chess?

Place the white queen on the left side of the white king piece. It should be four squares from the left side of the board. Place the black queen piece directly across from the other queen piece. Remember: white queen = white square, black queen = black square.

Is the King on the Right or Left in Chess?

Chess rules dictate that these initial positions are always the same. The white king is placed to the right of the queen, while the black king is placed to the left of the queen.

What Side does the King and Queen Go on in Chess?

While arranging these pieces, make sure that the black Queen goes on a black square and the white Queen goes on a white square ("Queen on her own color"). The King then goes on the square next to the Queen. It is very important that you place these two pieces properly.
